Shishapangma Expedition
Often overlooked, Shishapangma is the least known of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks — and the only one located entirely within Tibet. Despite its low profile, it’s among the most accessible of the big mountains, with vehicle access all the way to the north base camp.
Revered in Nepal as Gosainthan, the sacred seat of Lord Shiva, this peak carries spiritual weight as well as natural majesty. The first successful climb was by a major Chinese expedition in 1964, which also built the road to its northern base. The southern approach was explored later, in 1982, by a British team.
Today, Shishapangma is a favored destination for climbers seeking a high-altitude challenge without the extreme remoteness of other Himalayan giants. Whether you begin your journey in Lhasa or from the Nepal border at Zhangmu, this itinerary offers a balanced mix of culture, acclimatization, and adventure.
